Interior Exterior Wallcovering belbien™ Services

Wallcovering installation is, by its very nature, a subjective decorating process. Some of the contributing factors to this bias are:
The existing wall surface and related structures
The pattern and/or texture
The physical properties of the wallcovering

Walls can have a rough texture, bow in and out, sway, lean and most often do not have plumb corners. Surrounding structures, like windows and doors, are often out of plumb, and sometimes drastically. The ceiling line can sway and dip unevenly. All of the above will visually affect the horizontal and vertical look of the completed installation to some extent.

A pattern that crosses the seam in many places will tend to hide the seam. A paper with no pattern crossing the seam will tend to show all wall defects and texture in those areas. Generally speaking, a busier (not necessarily loud) pattern will tend to visually hide a lot of surface defects. A slick or shiny wallcovering will reflect light. This causes even minute surface flaws to show. On the other hand, heavily textured papers like grasscloth hide many surface irregularities.

Some wallpapers are flexible and malleable. Others are rigid and unyielding. Still others are a combination of the two. Some papers have a tendency to shred, even when cut with a sharp razor blade. There are papers that react with gold and aluminum. One touch of either metal leaves a permanent mark on the surface. Papers that must be hand trimmed will not have an exact match at the seams. Even with the machine trimming the match may be off and still meet manufacturers’ tolerances.

All of the above-listed factors and others will impact the finished wallcovering installation to some degree. The wisest course of action is to take all three factors into considering when selecting your wallcovering. Michael J. Kelly & Son can give you valuable advice in this area – please ask!

Time is money. The proposal you have received is for installing wallcovering and the related wall preparation. Some factors that result in a higher than normal price may include: time consuming window treatments, limited working space, furniture moving and fixture removal, limited parking, and high-rise or difficult locations involving elevator travel. In effect, anything that causes extra time spent on a site. Your contractor can give the best service at the lowest rate if the walls are bare, all furnishings are moved three feet away from the walls, and sinks, countertops and medicine chests are clear/empty.

A professional installer has years worth of experience in installing your wallcovering. Every wallcovering has certain inherent features that limit what can be accomplished with that particular material. Michael J. Kelly & Son will make every effort to produce the best job possible within those limitations.
